Gotokuji Temple’s historical significance is intertwined with the illustrious Ii Clan, whose patronage elevated the temple’s status. Legend has it that Lord Ii Naotaka, a prominent member of the clan, sought refuge from a storm under a tree near the temple, where he was beckoned by a cat. Grateful for this seemingly miraculous intervention, Lord Ii became a benefactor of the temple, initiating a long-standing association between the clan and the temple.
